Ghost Hunting True Stories of Unexplained Phenomena from The Atlantic Paranormal Society

The Atlantic Paranormal Society, also known as T.A.P.S., is the brainchild of two plumbers by day, paranormal investigators by night: Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. Their hair-raising investigations, fueled by their unique abilities and a healthy dose of scientific method, have made them the subject of a hit TV show: the SCI FI Channel’s Ghost Hunters.
Now their experiences are in print for the first time, as Jason and Grant recount for us, with the help of veteran author Michael Jan Friedman, the stories of some of their most memorable investigations. The men and women of T.A.P.S. pursue ghosts and other supernatural phenomena with the most sophisticated scientific equipment available — from thermal-imaging cameras to electromagnetic-field recorders to digital thermometers — and the results may surprise you. Featuring both cases depicted on Ghost Hunters and earlier T.A.P.S. adventures never told before now, this funny, fascinating, frightening collection will challenge everything you thought you knew about the spirit world.

As someone who has an unfortunate involvement with a “gossip” haunting, I am very interested in any approach taken by paranormal investigators who are really interested in getting to the truth of an allegedly “haunted” situation.
Their investigative methods are impressive and interesting to follow. They have a professional approach to a common problem which creates a very strong confidence in their results. This is what attracted me to the show in the first place, and which prompted my purchase of the book.
In the first part of the series, there was considerable on-camera criticism of some members of the team, Brian in particular, which I thought sounded an off-note to the series–it was almost as though they felt they had to compete with drama programs and so included their own. It was surprising to me to hear Jason chide his teammates to “be professional”, yet including this somewhat off-topic criticism in the series seemed very unprofessional. Unfortunatly, this was also included in the book. Fortunately, they have dropped this approach in subsequent programs.
In spite of which, the book is very enjoyable, it’s like having a chat with the members of TAPS and hearing about their adventures on the various trips. I read the book in one sitting, and subsequently found myself picking it up to read chapters here and there occasionally. It is a real extension of the program. They have done a great job of translating their personalities to the printed page, and I think makes it a worthwhile read, whether you are new to TAPS or a follower of the program. It didn’t bother me to read the re-hash of incidents which were included on the programs, as it is usually a slightly different take of what happened on camera.
Looking forward to more books, and more programs.
